Stock

Stock is a circular alternative to crockery, where existing biscuits are reglazed. This way you save on the raw materials and energy required for firing a new set of crockery. New, contemporary colour combinations allow plates with different designs to be reassembled into unique sets of crockery.

The jury on Stock:

Stock provides an ingenious answer to the challenges frequently faced by second-hand shops: how to breathe new life into an existing, used set of crockery in a low-tech way? With the new layer of glazing, you get a uniform crockery set. This seemingly simple idea can have a lot of impact.

What does this award mean to you?

First and foremost, we see this award as a huge compliment. It’s very gratifying to be judged so positively by a panel of peers. With this award, we complete a journey spanning two years: we started from an idea and, via many prototypes and a gradual scaling up, we are now able to put a fully-fledged product on the market. This is the perfect opportunity to now present Stock Antwerpen to a wider audience in Flanders.

How did the idea for this project come about?

With Stock, our aim is to provide new solutions to everyday needs. Our ambition is to always work as far as possible with a local workforce and local suppliers, along with a minimal use of new raw materials.

What makes your project so special?

Our product shows that circular solutions to everyday needs are not only feasible but can even lead to unique products. The crockery sets are produced with local raw materials with respect for our socio-economic responsibilities, and they form a unique new set each time.

How does it contribute to a better world?

Compared to a conventional ceramic production process, we save a lot with Stock Antwerpen. Ninety-five percent of the raw materials had to come from discarded plates. We also reduce energy consumption by about 45% by not having to fire the biscuit clay. Moreover, we produce everything locally, which also greatly reduces the carbon footprint of transportation.

Do you have any further plans for this project?

Initially, we plan to further expand our range to include plates, bowls and cups to offer a complete dinner service. We also want to investigate whether our process can be applied to other products on or around the table, for example, cutlery, table linen or glassware.
