ETAP Lighting

Since CEO Dominiek Plancke took the helm at ETAP Lighting, the company has been going through a profound transformation. Thus, the focus shifted from selling new products to circular solutions for (emergency) lighting. It is also increasingly focusing on lighting services, where you rent the lighting infrastructure as well as its maintenance on a long-term basis. “Many people see this as lighting leasing, but that isn’t the essence. With the performance commitment, we guarantee quality light and long-term energy savings.”

On ETAP Lighting

    • 1949: Founded by Norbert Joris. The focus was initially on shipping, for which ETAP rewound electric motors. A little later, it started making functional lighting, first for ships, then for other sectors.
    • 1960: The lighting division continued to grow and moved to Malle, where it started designing lighting for offices, schools, and healthcare facilities.
    • 1970: ETAP incorporated emergency lighting into its range and became one of the key players in the European market.
    • 1970-2000: Sales offices were added in the Netherlands, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, and Sweden.
    • 2003: LED lighting emerged as a new light source and ETAP became one of the first to use LED in emergency lighting. General lighting followed in 2010 and all products were now LED.
    • 2018: Light as a Service (LaaS) was introduced, where ETAP rents out lighting fixtures, including maintenance service.
    • 2020: ETAP resolutely wanted to switch to circular energy-efficient solutions. It rolled out Circular Light as a Service in which refurbishing fluorescent fixtures played a central role.

“The design philosophy is based on three circular principles: the product must last indefinitely, be maintained effortlessly, and not generate waste”

The jury on ETAP Lighting

The jury awarded the Ecodesign by OVAM Gold Award to ETAP Lighting for its progressive strategy in the field of sustainability. With its innovative concept “Circular Light as a Service,” ETAP has taken an important step towards a circular business model. Instead of selling lighting, the company is offering a service through which customers receive lighting. To realize this shift to service, the product range was completely rethought from the perspective of maintenance, disassembly, repair and replacement of parts, which significantly extends the lifespan of the products. In addition, the company is committed to upgrading existing lighting in buildings.
