The Hey Jute cushion is a high-end artisanal prod- uct for which a new application was developed for a forgotten material, resulting from an extensive research into the context, value and application of jute.

Jute is the second most-cultivated textile fibre in the world. Industrial processing and chemical treatment destroy the natural qualities of this ecological material and it tends to be used to make a utilitarian, cheap product like cargo sacking. We do not make use of its full potential. To examine this potential, Alexander Marinus devel- oped a new craft method that fits in a small chain, does not require chemical treatment and works with – instead of against – its natural qualities to create a high-end product. Hard and soft brushing opens the bundle of fibres in a controlled way. Then the fibres are stitched to each other to create a textile surface that showcases the fibre in its entire length, including all variations and irregularities. This surface becomes a shell that is filled up with cut-off waste. The finishings are hand-stitched.

The Hey Jute cushion is a robust and a delicate product for indoor and outdoor use. Because of the deliberate- ly chosen price Hey Jute breaks a lance for the fair appreciation of an ecologic textile material and for local craftsmanship. The cushions conserves the length of the raw material (but can also be made to measure), the strong fibre provides a sustainable cushion (strong and in the end still biodegradable), the pure material gives it an exceptional look.
