Stack

Stack is a modular furniture system consisting of a set of horizontal and vertical aluminium components that click together, allowing for different configurations. The furniture forms an abstract composition of planes and lines, with contrast between sharp and rounded corners. The online configurator allows consumers to assemble and order their own Stack. The furniture system can later be reassembled, split up or supplemented.

Stack proves that modular furniture can be ingenious in its apparent simplicity. The high-end furniture pays attention to detail, including in the attractive connecting pieces that are perfectly integrated into the design. It exists on its own, whether empty or filled. The jury also appreciated the customisability and nice details, such as the absence of screws.

What does this award mean to you?

The Henry van de Velde Award is a prestigious award that recognises designers for their innovative contributions. For us, winning this award is a huge incentive to further develop Stack.

How did the idea for this project come about?

We developed Stack driven by our own needs. During the pandemic, we found a fantastic office space but, during that period, there was so much uncertainty about how long we would be able to stay there. That’s why we designed furniture that’s light, easy to assemble and disassemble and mobile. It also needed to be adaptable, depending on changing situations and the size of our office. In addition, it had to be flexible in shape and blend effortlessly into any interior.

What makes your project so special?

Simple, effective, stable, stackable and extendable. Stack is a system that clicks together without screws or attachments. The result is an extremely versatile, sustainable and flexible furniture system that offers countless combinations and possibilities. Our configurator allows customers to put together their ideal Stack, thus actively involving them in the design process. The system can be perfectly integrated in various environments, such as residential spaces, offices and shops. Moreover, Stack is an entirely Belgian product, designed in Ghent and manufactured in Bruges. Packaging and shipping happens at a sheltered workplace in Ghent. Within eight weeks, we deliver worldwide.

How does it contribute to a better world?

Stack is a sustainable and local product. It is not a disposable product but is flexible and can evolve with the changing needs of users. Stack is made exclusively of aluminium and is therefore 100% recyclable.

Do you have any further plans for this project?

Our goal is to develop Stack into an internationally recognised and timeless brand, synonymous with functionality, simplicity and elegance. While the current version is a strong foundation, we have plans to expand the system with new modules and furniture based on the same philosophy.
