The Exploded View

The Exploded View Materials & Methods is the result of a multi-year research programme of the Embassy of bio-based and circular construction, in which designers, entrepreneurs, researchers, policymakers and storytellers join forces to look for sustainable answers to the building challenge that the Netherlands currently faces.

How do you create a million extra homes over the next ten years and reduce CO2 emissions by half? The Embassy’s answer to bio-based and circular construction is clear: by building affordable, sustainable and circular homes made of bio-based materials. Using the metaphor of a house, The Exploded View materialises its findings in a travelling installation. At first sight, visitors will discover a typical house with seven rooms. Only The Exploded View is not an ordinary house; the endless number of applications that are present in a house are dissected. What material flows into and out of a private house and how can these contribute to its construction? Each of the seven rooms starts from a basic theme and shows appropriate bio-based materials. For example, we see a room with acoustic foam made of fungi, a wall of popcorn, a wall of 3D printed sewage water or a floor of mussel shells. Rather than an exhaustive overview of all bio-based materials, The Exploded View is a source of inspiration for professionals and the general public and a stage for the latest bio-based materials and techniques.
