Scenographies is a modular grandstand system that can be used over and over again for different projects or clients who want to transform a (public) space. The basis of the grandstand system consists of second-hand pallet racks and a timber frame made from recovered wood that can easily be (re)recycled.

The modular Scenographies grandstand system by Decoratelier Jozef Wouters is a statement made of space, a structure of wooden scaffolding that always takes on other forms through various collaborations.  Scenography takes shape at the client’s request and the space in which it is built. The modular aspect provides the opportunity to respond to rapidly changing conditions. This makes each application unique and site-specific. The base of the grandstand system consists of second-hand pallet racks; the wooden frame is made according to the size of the racks using recycled wood and local wood from sustainable timber construction, which can be easily recycled (or recycled again). Many hands can build on the modules together. The wooden parts are designed in such a way that low-skilled workers can reproduce them easily, without experience in woodworking. For Decoratelier, Scenographies is not only a way to shape space, but also to bring together a group of builders and local residents and offer them work and work experience. Scenographies was perfected in its current form during the COVID crisis and offers a sustainable answer to demand from the arts (and performing arts) and events sector for alternative presentation contexts. Recent and current Scenographies applications are: the open-air festival Something when it doesn’t rain (Brussels, ’20-’21), the temporary public swimming pool FLOW commissioned by Pool is Cool (Brussels, ’21) and an open-air theatre in the Begijnhofpark commissioned by Danspunt (Kortrijk, ’21). The original design of Scenographies has been developed by Jozef Wouters, Menno Vandevelde and Marc Dewit.
